Hannah | Rubin, Duncan Hannah and Gideon Rubin

Two artists, friends who are yet to meet in person, share a common interest in the past.

With a particular attraction to the visual imagery of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. This shared interest is the common ground for their first collaboration, which follows a long overseas online friendship.

I first saw Gideon’s work in the penthouse of a mutual collector, James Velaise, in Paris a few years ago. I was fascinated by his painterly realism and subject matter, impressed by his sensuality, speed, accuracy, and harmonious palette. I next saw his work at the ADAA art fair in NYC, which underlined my admiration. Then came Instagram, where we connected and traded small oils across the ocean. And now we’re showing together kindred spirits who have yet to meet, yet have been having a painterly dialogue even before we were aware of each other. We are very different kinds of painters in terms of execution, but also extremely sympatico. Mutual respect! It’s an honour.

 Hannah’s work focuses on the very same decades that I keep returning to in my own work. Reminiscent of the sexual undertones in the French films of the 1960’s and 70’s, my attraction was instant. Hannah's imagined covers of 50’s and 60’s French magazines posted on his Instagram were literally irresistible. Happily, we soon exchanged works, and although we never met in person, it seems that we have found common ground across land and sea - and even a decade or two. I just wanted to thank Duncan for coming along on this adventure and to Alon Segev for giving us a space to interact and experiment.
